The History of GPS
As one of the pioneering organizations in STEM, our parent company Kids In Technology saw the need to create a special program for girls. Introducing Girls Pursuing Science.
In June 2014, Girls Pursuing Science (GPS) launched its first summer academy as a division of Kids In Technology. We began our journey in two locations, Mississippi and North Carolina. Both academies sold out and ended with great successes.
According to one student, D. Johnson from Leland, High School: “I am still selling my products… I started my own business after our GPS Summer Academy ended.”
GPS continued in the fall of 2015, implementing the first STEAM Studio at Druid Hills Academy in Charlotte, NC. This academy started with 15 novice 5th -7th grade girls who pursued science and found it.
The academy at Druid Hills were winners in the 2015 STEM Competition, and took 2nd Place in Robotics and Health Care Divisions—a competition that included older and more advanced students.
GPS continues to win victories for our girls, receiving the “Best Community Connection” Award from WTVI Charlotte and earning the title of “American Graduate Champion” by the Public Broadcasting Station (PBS).
We’re not stopping any time soon.
